Despite what main stream media and the current federal government would have you believe, a gun in itself is a tool. As such it has never formulated the notion of ending someone’s life on its own. It requires human control and intention to serve any purpose, good or bad. There are some that think a misguided crusade against legal guns will somehow, magically, stop gun-related crime. The fact that illegally obtained guns are used in the commission of a majority of these crimes should be enough to tell them that getting rid of legal firearms will do nothing, but for some reason, they don’t want see it.
Our own vice president, who is crusading to ban firearms, has publically stated that they know the weapons they are trying to ban are responsible for less than 2% of firearm related crime. In addition, it was also his suggestion to fire a shotgun into the air or through a bedroom door, which people have been arrested for doing since those comments. It is nothing more than a scare tactic to generate fear in those that want a crusade to follow, but can’t be bothered by finding actual facts to back up your accusations and delusions.
I don’t know if a lot of people know this, but violence is part of human nature. It has been the entire span of time that human beings have been on this planet, before guns even existed in someone’s mind. Before that it was swords and knives, before that it was bows and arrows, and before that it was stones and spears. There is nothing new about violence in our society, only the delusional attempts to quell it has changed. A tool utilized in an act of violence is not the cause of that act, instead, it is the intent and action of the human being that is the cause. It doesn’t matter if is a stone, arrow, or a gun, it is an inanimate object that is incapable of thought or intent. It requires an outside influence.
If we are going to get on the soapbox and lead a charge, then let’s at least be realistic and mature about the discussion. Why is a child being shot so much more terrible than a child being killed by a drunk driver? I know, some like to dismiss this argument because it is not conducive to their opinion, but it is actually quite similar. The alcohol itself is not what causes a person to drive drunk, instead, it is the choice of a person to drink knowing they will need to drive later. Again, we have an inanimate substance incapable of thought and intent until a human being makes the choice to use the substance for nefarious purposes. So what makes one worse than another? Simple, people don’t want to give up their alcohol at social gatherings and dinners. I have to ask, however, anyone who is a social drinker or a raging alcoholic, how would they react if it was alcohol being heavily regulated, controlled, and confiscated? They tried that once before and succeeded only in generating more crime.
The common factor is the human being. More children are killed every year by drunk drivers yet very few are crusading to put an end to that. There is no considerable push by the federal government to make the consumption of alcohol illegal or to confiscate the current alcohol stores. There are very few programs that seek to educate families about the dangers of consuming alcohol and driving. We all know it happens, but it has just become accepted that the price of your social drinking is the occasional drunk driver who will kill someone. Of course, some will claim that they drink responsibly, and they may do so, but under the same premise that legal gun-owners are now facing, the acts of a few could lead to your social drinking coming to an end. You did not drink and drive, you did not kill anyone, but you will have to give up your drinking, social or otherwise, because some drunk crashed into a family sedan and killed a child and/or their parents. Only fair, right?
It is not only hypocritical to push for illegal and unconstitutional gun grabs, it is irresponsible and opens the door to increases in violent crime, which means that law-abiding citizens will be betrayed and turned into criminals. Once this happens, the real criminals who pay no attention to your gun laws, will be emboldened to commit more serious crimes. You see, there is much less risk to a criminal when you have no means to defend yourselves. The bottom line is that making honest and innocent people into criminals will not give you the safety net you seek, instead, it will only make you more of a victim. If you are not going to focus on the actual problems, then you are doing nothing to stop violence. A band-aid is not what this country needs.
